Counseling: The Musical

>> Tuesday, October 21, 2008

You know, there is something to be said for my crazy professor who I talked about in my last post. As much as the man drives me crazy with his long stories, I really have to give him a hand on his ability to compare counseling and psychology to the most random things. Today, it was musicals and babies...

Just like Cats, Phantom of the Opera, or A Chorus Line, any counseling program goes through stages. There is the planning stage (think of that as the brainstorming and writing the script), design (that's where the musical composition comes in), implementation (opening night!), evaluation (review in the NY Times), and maintenance (how many years was Cats on stage again??). Sometimes, when a playwrite and composer don't like the way a musical is going, they cut a song, or sometimes, they even add a song...so next time you start a counseling program, be sure to evaluate and decide whether or not you should add a song or take out a dance scene...

The next question of the evening: How are counseling programs like babies? Simple, he says. Ever seen a parent who thinks their child is the most beautiful one in the world, but really, they aren't so cute? Well, folks, sometimes we create community programs that are UGLY BABIES!

So there you go...watch out for new song and dance routines in your local community counseling programs, and beware of the ugly babies.
